[sticky entry] Sticky: YGORPMB Info

Welcome to the Yugioh Rare Pairs Mini Bang!
This post will outline the basics of the event and rules for the community. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment or email a mod at ygorarepairs@gmail.com. If you're part of the Discord server, questions are also always okay there.

The YRPMB was created as an event for fans of the lesser appreciated ships in the fandom. Any ship from any series that meets the rarity limit criteria on AO3 is welcome!

This event alternates from the standard style of mini bang and a reverse bang each year. The 2024-2025 bang is a reverse bang, so artists will be selecting this year's ships.

Quick update... nearing the end of posting!

hi minibangers! we've got about a week to go for posting. please make sure you're posting fics to the collection: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/YGOMiniBang24_25. if fics are not shared with the collection, there will be delays with the gallery being created since it cannot be created until all fics are there. this saves me time when collecting links for both fics and art. if you're not sure how to share your fic to a collection, see this link https://archiveofourown.org/faq/collections?language_id=en#addcollection. If you're still not sure, send an email to ygorarepairs @ gmail . com. (no spaces)

if you know you're not going to be able to post your piece by april 5, please also send an email so [personal profile] miscellanium and i can plan an extension with you

great work so far! it's wonderful to see everyone's work cross the finish line with their partner!

[admin post] Admin Post: Updated posting period

Hi everyone!

We're getting close to posting, so if you haven't already discussed how you'd like to do this with your partner, this week is a good time. The AO3 collection will be made available this weekend, so stay tuned for this. Here's the collection: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/YGOMiniBang24_25

Posting will take place from March 9 - April 5. This allows everyone more space to spread out posting, and many people have requested extensions to finish their pieces. If you know you won't be able to post by April 5, please contact a mod and your partner ASAP to discuss an extension.

2024-2025 Schedule

UPDATE: This year is a reverse bang: artist→writer

Since last year was a standard bang, we're reversing the order for this year's mini bang, which means artists will create first! All artists and mediums welcome! The minimum word count to participate for writers is 2000.

I can't believe this is the fourth year of the mini bang, and I'm really excited to see what everyone creates this year!

2024/2025 Schedule:

────────────────────────────────
Signups: Nov 1-Nov 30 (artists may start immediately)
Check-in #1 (artists only): Dec 20-22
Artists should have 1/2 of their draft completed in addition to a detailed summary to share for writer claims. This is also considered the drop out deadline for artists. You are expected to finish out the mini bang beyond this point, and you may not be allowed to participate next year if you drop out once you're assigned a partner.
•  Claims: Dec 24-27
Claims assigned: Jan 1
Check-in #2 WIP share: Jan 31-Feb 2
Artists and writers will share their work in progress on Discord or through email. This is also a good time to give or receive feedback from your fellow minibangers and just generally bask in each other's greatness!
This is the deadline for writers to drop out of the mini bang. You are expected to finish out the mini bang beyond this point, and you may not be allowed to participate next year if you drop out past this point.
Check-in #3: Feb 23-25
Both artists and writers should be nearing completion for their pieces. This is the final check in before posting.
Posting prep: March 6-8
All fics must be completed and scheduled to post to the AO3 collection. Artists must decide where their final piece will be posted and communicate this with their partner.
Partners must decide on a posting date so the post schedule can be finalized. Partners should also chat about how they'd like to credit each other along with their work. In the past, some artists are alright with having their art reposted on AO3 on the writer's fic while others may prefer a link to their own page with their work.
Posting: March 9-15
Artists and writers will make their pieces go live! Remember to take a look at your fellow mini bangers pieces too and appreciate everyone's hard work!

If you already know you’re interested in participating this year and would like to join our Discord community, please send a message via Dreamwidth or email ygorarepairs@gmail.com. You do not need to join Discord in order to participate, but will need to have a point of contact for your partner and check-ins. I will also of course make another post once sign ups are open.

Feel free to reach out with any questions!

24/25 Specifications

ARTISTS:
Artists should create at least 1 detailed piece (any medium; examples include but are not limited to digital art, traditional art, comics, fan edits, AMVs, and MMDs) for a rare pair of their choosing. In the case there are more writers than artists (or in cases where an artist decides to create art for more than one pairing), doubles will be assigned only after ALL fics have been claimed by at least one writer.
  • All skill levels and mediums welcome! You are expected to stay in touch with your writer throughout your creative process, so please make sure to send updates about your progress periodically once you have a partner.
  • At the time of claims, artists will share a summary of their work with detailed descriptions of the ship dynamic, mood, themes, etc. Artists will not share drafts as part of their summary for claims so that their ideas stay anonymous to prevent style bias.

WRITERS:

Writers should create a fic at least 2000 words in length inspired by their partner's art. Betas for writers are encouraged, but not required.
  • You are expected to stay in touch with your artist throughout your creative process, so please make sure to send updates about your progress periodically once you have a partner.

POSTING:

Artists must communicate with writers about how their art will be posted and how it should be credited for their fic (embedded, linked, etc.). Artists may post their art to any platform on posting day, but they must also link back to the fic and credit the writer appropriately. Fics must be posted to AO3 as part of this year’s mini bang collection. You may also post your fic to other websites once posting day arrives.

UPDATE: Order reversal back to writer→artist
Since last year was a reverse bang, we're back to the typical ordering for this year's mini bang, which means writers will create first! All writers welcome!

The same as the first mini bang, the minimum word count to participate is 4000. I've decided to remove the upper limit cap, but please do not take this as a challenge to write 100k in 3 months ;).

I'm really looking forward to this year and thinking about making some swanky internet swag for people to show off this year (in addition to any creations they create)! Thank you everyone for the THIRD year of this event! I'm so glad I get the joy of coordinating this cool little event for a wonderful community again this year.

Artist ship submission (do this by Dec. 4)

Quick update for artists: while i appreciate everyone's enthusiasm, please remember that the event hasn't technically started yet, and i don't want anyone to get too far ahead without confirming their ship and it's rarity. it would be disappointing to put in work with the assumption that the ship can be used without getting the go-ahead with mods.

if you're already decided on your ship(s), please submit your final decision here: https://forms.gle/LqvNxxccFW64MwD1A. you may submit more that one ship if you are undecided and want to leave it up to writers to decide on which ship will move forward for the mini bang. if you submit more than one ship, please note that you will need to have drafts for all options at the time of first check-in (Dec. 25-27) so you can accurately describe your vision for each. this will also make it easier for you to finish your work once your writer is assigned.

there's nothing wrong with working ahead, but i want to be sure that everyone has confirmation first before finishing. as a reminder, final pieces are not due until Feb. 28 for artists.

Rarity ruling update

Quick update based on discussion happening in the Discord. A few participants were concerned about what constitutes rarity for their particular series and suggested tiers to address this. There was also some concern about using the otp: true filter, which filters out works that do not exclusively focus on a ship. The otp: true option was added to rules to address concerns coming from DM fans who last year noticed that there were a lot of ship tags that were overinflated by users who would tag background ships that appear for a single sentence or in the case of drabble posts where there was a singular 100 word drabble within a multichapter post with hundreds of other ships. These fans do not feel like a drabble qualifies, nor do singular appearances of a ship within a work where it's not the focus. So, to summarize, this seemed to be an issue only for DM and not the spin offs, so otp: true should only be used when looking for the rarity of a DM ship.

There were also some suggestions that the number of authors for a ship should be considered when deciding on its rarity. However, that is not the focus of this event, as a bang's goal is to increase the number of works rather than diversify the number of creators. Both mods are concerned that would lead this event into analyzing the popularity of a ship rather than its rarity, so this event will not be discounting works based on authorship alone. The focus will be on numbers when deciding rarity. [personal profile] miscellanium said it nicely: "one thing for us to all keep in mind is that this isn't about the popularity of a ship but about building the library of fic/art works for that ship. so if you don't see something often that doesn't mean it counts for this event because the library might be a decent size already."

That being said, all of this would not be of concern for writers this year, since artists are the ones that will be picking the ships (next year will swing back to writers). Artists should consider these numbers when deciding on the ship they'll focus on for their work.

Here are the revised rulings for rarity for all series:
- dm: <30 with optional use of otp: true due to issues with tagging in the fandom
- gx: <30
- 5ds: <30
- zexal: <30
- arcv: <15
- vrains: <15
- sevens: <15
- go rush: <15
- ocg structures: <15
- ocg stories: <15
- card game lore: <15

Please let me know if you have any questions about this, or disagree with the limits decided by the community. Consider these rules set for this year if there are no additional comments from the community within 24 hours. I appreciate everyone's thoughts and feedback!

FAQ - last updated Oct. 19, 2024

What’s a mini bang?
A mini bang is similar to a big bang, but on a smaller scale. Essentially, it’s a fan event centered around collaboration between artists and writers related to a specific series or ship. Most big bangs have high word counts for writers, typically over 30k words. Bangs usually have writers draft fics first and then artists claim fics they’d like to create art for. A mini bang does the same thing, but usually caps the word limit at 10k due to the run of the event being shorter. For example, the traditional YRPMB (fics first) has a 4k word minimum, while the reverse YRPMB (art first) has a 2k word minimum. There is a lower threshold for the reverse mini bang due to writers having less time to draft than during the traditional bang.

 What’s a reverse bang?
A reverse bang is similar to a typical bang. The only difference is that artists create their pieces first and a writer claims a piece as the inspiration for a fic.

Why does this event change between the traditional bang style and a reverse bang?
This event flip flops to keep the event fresh and exciting each year. 2022 was the first year we tried out the reverse bang format, and the community showed interest in this back and forth dynamic. As mod, I feel like this will encourage creativity and different appreciations of ships to avoid a lot of the same thing each year. There is also no other fan event in the YGO fandom that has the reverse bang structure, so it’s exciting to be a first.

What counts as a rare pair?
For this event, rarity is determined by tiered numbers of fics on AO3:

- DM: <30 with optional use of otp: true due to issues with tagging in the fandom
- GX: <30
- 5Ds: <30
- Zexal: <30
- Arc-V: <15
- Vrains: <15
- Sevens: <15
- Go Rush: <15

I am aware that this may not be representative of the cumulative popularity of a ship, as it doesn’t count various different art and fic posting platforms, but it is the most reliable metric of determining this. Authorship numbers do not determine rarity. The mods and several community members feel this is disrespectful to a person's body of work to discount it from the ruling, as it implies that just because one or two authors have written for a ship, their work does not matter. We do not feel like this is true and believe that popularity is not equal to rarity. Rarity involves the number of works in a library, both fic and art, and the goal of this event is to add to those numbers to get more works out there.

Can I participate if I don't have/want to use Discord?
Yes! You just need a way to communicate with the mod and your partner once paired. I would recommend email if you're not comfortable using Discord. Other options are Twitter DMs, Dreamwidth PMs, Tumblr chat, etc. Keep in mind that not everyone uses the same platforms, so you should pick something that will be actively checked by everyone you need to stay in contact with.

What if I’m not paired with anyone?
I’ve made it my duty to make sure everyone is paired with a partner. There are many people in this event that are passionate about rare pairs, especially ones they hadn’t considered before. I promise there will be at least one other person that will be interested in what you have to share. Call it shadow realm magic! In all seriousness though, there are always multiple people willing to pinch hit and will deliver some fantastic art and fic.

What happens if the ratio of artists to writers is lopsided?
In case that there is an uneven number of participants to be paired, pinch hitting is incentivized. I encourage people to sign up with the knowledge that they may need to pinch hit for someone else. Pinch hitting expectations are not the same as the specs shared since I nor anyone else involved in this event want to overburden anyone. At a minimum, pinch hitters are expected to write a fic 1000 words in length or share a complete sketch for their partner’s piece. In exchange for this extra effort, pinch hitters will be rewarded by the community with a ficlet 300-1000 words in length or a sketch of a rare pair of their choosing.

Can I apply with a ship that has 30 or more fics?
No. You will need to pick something else or look to another fan event.

Are ships with 3 or more characters allowed?
Yes! Just make sure the ship is represented with all characters involved with one another equally. There should not be a situation where, for example, Kaiba is the third wheel to Blue Eyes White Dragon and Saggi the Dark Clown.

Can I sign up with a writer/artist who already plans to claim my piece?
Yes and no. You may of course sign up; however, please be aware that the claim process is anonymous to prevent a popularity contest or have pieces go ignored because of conceptions about skill level, etc. There is definitely a high chance that you and your creative pal will be paired, but there is also a chance that it would be more fair to assign this person to someone else that has not had any other claims except for your buddy. Please keep this in mind when signing up.

What if I miss a deadline?
You will get several messages from my co-mod, miscellanium, or me, whimwitch. We try to be understanding about missed deadlines, but since this is an event with a pretty tight schedule, we do not want a situation where someone is left unpaired because someone's dropped out once it’s too late to assign a pinch hitter. Know that we will eventually give up and look to assigning someone else to your partner if we don’t hear from you for a while. “A while” is subjective, but assume it’s somewhere between 24-72 hours depending on where we are in the schedule. If a conflict comes up, you may drop out at any point. Please inform a mod and your partner so we can do our best to find a pinch hitter. If you drop past the drop out deadline, then you will not be allowed to participate in next year’s bang.

Can I post my works anywhere other than ao3?
Absolutely! Writers must at a minimum post their fic to ao3 so it can be added to the collection. This makes it easier for those in the event to see everyone's works. Currently, ao3 is the easiest platform the mods are aware of to create collections for fan events like this. Writers may repost their works wherever they'd like after adding their piece to the collection at the time of posting. Artists may post on any platform of their choosing, including ao3. Please make sure to communicate with your partner so you can credit each other appropriately.

Are duel monster ships allowed?
Yes! Any ship is allowed that meets the rarity criteria.

Can I create fanworks for more than one rarepair?
Yes! However, I can only guarantee that you will have one partner for one of your works. If we have an excess of writers/artists, then you may have double partners only after everyone else has a partner for their piece. You may always create more than one piece that's inspired by someone else's work (so for a standard bang, creating more than one piece of art for multiple fics; for a reverse bang, you would be writing more than one fic for multiple pieces of art).

Are AUs allowed in this event?
Yes!

Can I participate as a beta audience/pinch hitter only?
Yes! Just message me or let me know this is your preference when you sign up.

Are platonic ships allowed?
Yes! Please make sure to take non-platonic shipping into account when determining rarity since the majority of fics are tagged as non-platonic. For example, the tag "Honda Hiroto & Otogi Ryuji" has 3 fics total (as of when this was written). However, "Honda/Otogi" does not count as a rare pair because the non-platonic fics push it over the threshold (144 slash fics total; 34 when otp true is applied).
