UPDATE: Order reversal back to writer→artist
Since last year was a reverse bang, we're back to the typical ordering for this year's mini bang, which means writers will create first! All writers welcome!

The minimum word count to participate is 4000. When writers sign up, they may only sign up with ONE ship, so please make sure you've narrowed this down if you're indecisive :). Additionally, I will be putting a cap on the number of people that can sign up to make sure the capacity can be managed well. The first 30 writers that sign up can participate. Anyone that signs up after this may still write, but I will not be able to pair you with an artist. If someone drops out before claims, anyone on the "writer waitlist" can be filled into empty spots. The cutoff for acceptance will be on a first come, first served basis. Unless we suddenly get an influx of even more people, you should not worry about whether you'll make the cutoff! The event right now is "just right" for the mods to be able to manage well, and I don't want to take on more than we can manage or have too large of a community for it to feel comfortable.

I will NOT be advertising this event on Tumblr going forward, so if you have friends you'd like to invite, feel free to spread the word.

Changes will be made to the Discord to make it more manageable for the mods (ie: less bloat, no forums since these are problematic on Discord's end and not accessible for a lot of users). A Revolt server was also made, and it's a work in progress getting these two servers neatly bridged. If you have any interest in helping with this effort, feel free to reach out! I'll even deputize you as a tech mod!

I'm looking forward to year 5! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

2025/26 Calendar:

  • Sign-ups: Nov 1-30 (writers may start immediately)
  • Check-in #1 (writers only): Dec 21-23
    • Writers should have at least 1/3 of their draft completed.
  • Check-in #2 (writers w/ claim pitch): Jan 30-Feb 1
    • Writers should have 2/3 of their draft completed in addition to a detailed summary to share for artist claims.
    • This is also considered the drop out deadline for writers. You are expected to finish out the mini bang beyond this point, and you may not be allowed to participate next year if you drop out once you're assigned a partner.
  • Claims: Feb 2-6
  • Claims assigned: Feb 7/8
  • Artist WIP share: Feb 20-21
    • Artists will share their work in progress via a check in form. You may also share your WIP on Discord or Revolt, but please keep your WIP off of social media at this point. This is also a good time to give or receive feedback from your fellow artists and generally bask in each other's greatness!
    • This is the deadline for artists to drop out of the mini bang. You are expected to finish out the mini bang beyond this point, and you may not be allowed to participate next year if you drop out past this point.
  • Check-in #3 (artists and writers): Mar 6-7
    • Both writers and artists should be nearing completion for their pieces. This is the final check in before posting.
  • Posting prep: Mar 12-14
    • All fics must be completed and scheduled to post to the AO3 collection.
    • Artists must decide on where their final piece will be posted and communicate this with their partner.
    • Partners should also chat about how they'd like to credit each other along with their work. In the past, some artists are alright with having their art reposted on AO3 on the writer's fic while others may prefer a link to their own page with their work.
    • Writers may also post their works to other platforms, but AO3 is still the easiest way to host collections at the moment.
  • Posting: Mar 15-Apr 4
    • Writers and artists will make their pieces go live! Remember to take a look at your fellow minibangers' pieces too and appreciate everyone's hard work!
If you already know you’re interested in participating this year and would like to join our Discord or Revolt community, please send a message via Dreamwidth or email ygorarepairs@gmail.com. You do not need to join either platform to participate, but you will need to have a point of contact for your partner and check-ins.

I will make an update once sign ups actually open, but by no means is this stopping anyone from getting a head start and planning some ideas for this year.

Feel free to reach out with any questions! Happy minibanging!

hi minibangers! we've got about a week to go for posting. please make sure you're posting fics to the collection: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/YGOMiniBang24_25. if fics are not shared with the collection, there will be delays with the gallery being created since it cannot be created until all fics are there. this saves me time when collecting links for both fics and art. if you're not sure how to share your fic to a collection, see this link https://archiveofourown.org/faq/collections?language_id=en#addcollection. If you're still not sure, send an email to ygorarepairs @ gmail . com. (no spaces)

if you know you're not going to be able to post your piece by april 5, please also send an email so [personal profile] miscellanium and i can plan an extension with you

great work so far! it's wonderful to see everyone's work cross the finish line with their partner!

Hi everyone!

We're getting close to posting, so if you haven't already discussed how you'd like to do this with your partner, this week is a good time. The AO3 collection will be made available this weekend, so stay tuned for this. Here's the collection: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/YGOMiniBang24_25

Posting will take place from March 9 - April 5. This allows everyone more space to spread out posting, and many people have requested extensions to finish their pieces. If you know you won't be able to post by April 5, please contact a mod and your partner ASAP to discuss an extension.

UPDATE: Order reversal back to writer→artist
Since last year was a reverse bang, we're back to the typical ordering for this year's mini bang, which means writers will create first! All writers welcome!

The same as the first mini bang, the minimum word count to participate is 4000. I've decided to remove the upper limit cap, but please do not take this as a challenge to write 100k in 3 months ;).

I'm really looking forward to this year and thinking about making some swanky internet swag for people to show off this year (in addition to any creations they create)! Thank you everyone for the THIRD year of this event! I'm so glad I get the joy of coordinating this cool little event for a wonderful community again this year.

Thank you to everyone who completed their check in! It's great to hear from you all. For those who I haven't heard from yet, I'll be messaging you privately to see where things are at. If I do not hear from you by Feb. 10, I will assume that you need to drop the event and your piece may be reassigned.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

As a reminder, the next check-in will be Feb 26-28, and there will be a form to complete to share your doc/file. Artists are expected to have their pieces finished and writers are expected to be entering the final revision stage for their fics.

We're nearing the finish line! Great work, everyone!

Quick update for artists: while i appreciate everyone's enthusiasm, please remember that the event hasn't technically started yet, and i don't want anyone to get too far ahead without confirming their ship and it's rarity. it would be disappointing to put in work with the assumption that the ship can be used without getting the go-ahead with mods.

if you're already decided on your ship(s), please submit your final decision here: https://forms.gle/LqvNxxccFW64MwD1A. you may submit more that one ship if you are undecided and want to leave it up to writers to decide on which ship will move forward for the mini bang. if you submit more than one ship, please note that you will need to have drafts for all options at the time of first check-in (Dec. 25-27) so you can accurately describe your vision for each. this will also make it easier for you to finish your work once your writer is assigned.

there's nothing wrong with working ahead, but i want to be sure that everyone has confirmation first before finishing. as a reminder, final pieces are not due until Feb. 28 for artists.

Quick update based on discussion happening in the Discord. A few participants were concerned about what constitutes rarity for their particular series and suggested tiers to address this. There was also some concern about using the otp: true filter, which filters out works that do not exclusively focus on a ship. The otp: true option was added to rules to address concerns coming from DM fans who noticed that there were a lot of ship tags that were overinflated by users who would tag background ships that appear for a single sentence or in the case of drabble posts where there was a singular 100 word drabble within a multichapter post with hundreds of other ships.

There were also some suggestions that the number of authors for a ship should be considered when deciding on its rarity. However, that is not the focus of this event, as a bang's goal is to increase the number of works rather than diversify the number of creators. Both mods are concerned that would lead this event into analyzing the popularity of a ship rather than its rarity, so this event will not be discounting works based on authorship alone. The focus will be on numbers when deciding rarity. [personal profile] miscellanium said it nicely: "one thing for us to all keep in mind is that this isn't about the popularity of a ship but about building the library of fic/art works for that ship. so if you don't see something often that doesn't mean it counts for this event because the library might be a decent size already."

Are platonic ships allowed?
Yes! Please make sure to take non-platonic shipping into account when determining rarity since the majority of fics are tagged as non-platonic. For example, the tag "Honda Hiroto & Otogi Ryuji" has 3 fics total (as of when this was written). However, "Honda/Otogi" does not count as a rare pair because the non-platonic fics push it over the threshold (144 slash fics total; 34 when otp true is applied).

Here are the revised rulings for rarity for all series:
- dm: <30 with optional use of otp: true due to issues with tagging in the fandom
- gx: <30
- 5ds: <30
- zexal: <30
- arcv: <15
- vrains: <15
- sevens: <15
- go rush: <15
- ocg structures: <15
- ocg stories: <15
- card game lore: <15

Please let me know if you have any questions about this, or disagree with the limits decided by the community. Consider these rules set for this year if there are no additional comments from the community within 24 hours. I appreciate everyone's thoughts and feedback!

Changes to the upcoming bang:
After conversations with last year’s community, contributors are interested in alternating the order of the bang to participate in a reverse bang this go-round. I also think this will encourage others to join in on this event and will add variety to the rare pairs showcased for this event.

If you are not familiar with what a reverse bang entails, please see this article: https://fanlore.org/wiki/Reverse_Bang. Please subscribe to this blog for updates regarding rules and requirements for the 22/23 mini bang.

Below is a tentative calendar for the 2022/23 Yugioh Rare Pairs Mini Bang:
  • Signups: Sep 19-Dec 4 (artists may start immediately)
  • Check-in #1 (artists only): Dec 25-27
    • ½ complete draft with detailed prompt/vision for fic claim.
  • Fic claim period: Dec 29-Dec 31
  • Fic claims assigned: Jan 2
  • Check-in #2 (artists & writers): Feb 1-3
    • Artists must have piece ¾ finished.
    • Writers must have fic ½ finished.
    • This is also the drop-out deadline for both artists and writers. If a spot is left unfilled, a pinch hitter will be assigned.
  • Check-in #3: Feb 26-28
    • Artists should have piece completed and submitted to their partner. Artists should also submit the final piece to mod with a link to the site/account they plan to post it.
    • Writers must have fic ¾ finished/in revision stages.
  • Final check-in: March 9-11
    • All fics must be completed and scheduled to post to the AO3 collection.
    • Partners must decide on a posting date so the post schedule can be finalized.
  • Posting: March 12-18
If you already know you’re interested in participating this year and would like to join our Discord community, please send a message via Dreamwidth or email ygorarepairs@gmail.com. You do not need to join Discord in order to participate, but will need to have a point of contact for your partner and check-ins. Feel free to reach out with any questions.

We've made it through the first two writer check-ins and officially made it to art claims! Woohoo! Thank you to all of the fabulous writers that joined us this year.

Here is a list of all of the pairings up for grabs this year--

DM: Kaiba/Marik; Ryou/Honda/Bakura; Anzu/TKB; Ryou/Kaiba/Yuugi

GX: O'Brien/Jim

5DS: Kalin & Radley; Bruno/Crow

ZX: IV/Vector; Vector/Zexal II

AV: Dennis/Yuya

VR: Ryoken/Spectre/Yusaku

Still looking for a few more artists to fill in to make sure all of these fics are covered. If you're an artist of any skill level into YGO that would like to join this event, send a message or an email to join in! Art claims last until 02/04 and after that anyone joining late will be pinch-hitting. These keeps everything less stressful to make up for any lost time.
