Welcome to the Yugioh Rare Pairs Mini Bang!
This post will outline the basics of the event and rules for the community. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment or email a mod at ygorarepairs@gmail.com. If you're part of the Discord or Revolt server, questions are also always okay there.

The YRPMB was created as an event for fans of the lesser appreciated ships in the fandom. Any ship from any series that meets the rarity limit criteria on AO3 is welcome!

This event alternates from the standard style of mini bang and a reverse bang each year. The 2025-2026 bang is a regular bang, so writers will be selecting this year's ships.

Regular Mini Bang Specs (Writer→Artist)
WRITERS:
Writers will create a fic at least 4000 words in length for a rare pair of their choice. If there are more artists than writers, doubles will be assigned only after ALL fics have been claimed by at least one artist.

At the time of claims, writers are expected to share a summary of their work with detailed descriptions of how to envision the ship/their fic. Writers will not share drafts as part of their summary for claims so that their ideas stay anonymous to prevent style bias.

ARTISTS:
Artists will create at least 1 detailed piece (any medium; examples include but are not limited to digital art, traditional art, comics, fan edits, AMVs, and MMDs) inspired by their partner's fic.

All skill levels and mediums welcome! You are expected to stay in touch with your writer throughout your creative process, so please make sure to send updates about your progress periodically.
- For an example of a detailed edit, take a look at Firebull's piece from 22/23.

POSTING:
Artists must communicate with writers about how their art will be posted and how it should be credited in the fic (embedded, linked, etc.). Artists may post their art to any platform on posting day, but they must also link back to the fic and credit the writer appropriately. Fics must be posted to AO3 as part of this year’s mini bang collection. You may also post your fic to other websites once posting day arrives.

Reverse Mini Bang Specs (Artist → Writer)
ARTISTS:
Artists will create at least 1 detailed piece (any medium; examples include but are not limited to digital art, traditional art, comics, fan edits, AMVs, and MMDs) for a rare pair of their choosing. If there are more writers than artists, doubles will be assigned only after ALL art pieces have been claimed by at least one writer.

UPDATE: Order reversal back to writer→artist
Since last year was a reverse bang, we're back to the typical ordering for this year's mini bang, which means writers will create first! All writers welcome!

The minimum word count to participate is 4000. When writers sign up, they may only sign up with ONE ship, so please make sure you've narrowed this down if you're indecisive :). Additionally, I will be putting a cap on the number of people that can sign up to make sure the capacity can be managed well. The first 30 writers that sign up can participate. Anyone that signs up after this may still write, but I will not be able to pair you with an artist. If someone drops out before claims, anyone on the "writer waitlist" can be filled into empty spots. The cutoff for acceptance will be on a first come, first served basis. Unless we suddenly get an influx of even more people, you should not worry about whether you'll make the cutoff! The event right now is "just right" for the mods to be able to manage well, and I don't want to take on more than we can manage or have too large of a community for it to feel comfortable.

I will NOT be advertising this event on Tumblr going forward, so if you have friends you'd like to invite, feel free to spread the word.

Changes will be made to the Discord to make it more manageable for the mods (ie: less bloat, no forums since these are problematic on Discord's end and not accessible for a lot of users). A Revolt server was also made, and it's a work in progress getting these two servers neatly bridged. If you have any interest in helping with this effort, feel free to reach out! I'll even deputize you as a tech mod!

2025/26 Calendar:

Sign-ups: Nov 1-30 (writers may start immediately)
Check-in #1 (writers only): Dec 21-23
- Writers should have at least 1/3 of their draft completed.
Check-in #2 (writers w/ claim pitch): Jan 30-Feb 1
- Writers should have 2/3 of their draft completed in addition to a detailed summary to share for artist claims.
- This is also considered the drop out deadline for writers. You are expected to finish out the mini bang beyond this point, and you may not be allowed to participate next year if you drop out once you're assigned a partner.
Claims: Feb 2-6
Claims assigned: Feb 7/8
Artist WIP share: Feb 20-21
- Artists will share their work in progress via a check in form. You may also share your WIP on Discord or Revolt, but please keep your WIP off of social media at this point. This is also a good time to give or receive feedback from your fellow artists and generally bask in each other's greatness!
- This is the deadline for artists to drop out of the mini bang. You are expected to finish out the mini bang beyond this point, and you may not be allowed to participate next year if you drop out past this point.
Check-in #3 (artists and writers): Mar 6-7
- Both writers and artists should be nearing completion for their pieces. This is the final check in before posting.
Posting prep: Mar 12-14
- All fics must be completed and scheduled to post to the AO3 collection.
- Artists must decide on where their final piece will be posted and communicate this with their partner.
- Partners should also chat about how they'd like to credit each other along with their work. In the past, some artists are alright with having their art reposted on AO3 on the writer's fic while others may prefer a link to their own page with their work.
- Writers may also post their works to other platforms, but AO3 is still the easiest way to host collections at the moment.
Posting: Mar 15-Apr 4
- Writers and artists will make their pieces go live! Remember to take a look at your fellow minibangers' pieces too and appreciate everyone's hard work!

You do not need to join either platform to participate, but you will need to have a point of contact for your partner and check-ins.

I will make an update once sign ups actually open, but by no means is this stopping anyone from getting a head start and planning some ideas for this year.

Description: This event focuses on rare pair ships for all Yugioh series (including crossovers), open to writers, artists, and image & video editors. We use tiered rulings to determine rarity for this event based on ao3 statistics. See our FAQ for more info on rarity requirements.

This year's mini bang is a reverse bang. Artists will create a piece for their chosen rare pair. Then writers will claim at least 1 art piece to use as inspiration for writing a fanfic. The same as the first mini bang, the minimum word count to participate is 4000. I've decided to remove the upper limit cap, but please do not take this as a challenge to write 100k in 3 months ;).

I'm really looking forward to this year and thinking about making some swanky internet swag for people to show off this year (in addition to any creations they create)! Thank you everyone for the THIRD year of this event! I'm so glad I get the joy of coordinating this cool little event for a wonderful community again this year.

That's a wrap for the 2022-2023 Yugioh reverse mini bang! Huge shout out to all 26 participants this year! This was the first year trying the role reversal, and it brought a lot of really cool artists and ships our way.

Thank you to everyone who completed their check in! It's great to hear from you all. For those who I haven't heard from yet, I'll be messaging you privately to see where things are at. If I do not hear from you by Feb. 10, I will assume that you need to drop the event and your piece may be reassigned.

As a reminder, the next check-in will be Feb 26-28, and there will be a form to complete to share your doc/file. Artists are expected to have their pieces finished and writers are expected to be entering the final revision stage for their fics.

Quick update for artists: while i appreciate everyone's enthusiasm, please remember that the event hasn't technically started yet, and i don't want anyone to get too far ahead without confirming their ship and it's rarity. it would be disappointing to put in work with the assumption that the ship can be used without getting the go-ahead with mods.

if you're already decided on your ship(s), please submit your final decision here: https://forms.gle/LqvNxxccFW64MwD1A. you may submit more that one ship if you are undecided and want to leave it up to writers to decide on which ship will move forward for the mini bang. if you submit more than one ship, please note that you will need to have drafts for all options at the time of first check-in (Dec. 25-27) so you can accurately describe your vision for each. this will also make it easier for you to finish your work once your writer is assigned.

there's nothing wrong with working ahead, but i want to be sure that everyone has confirmation first before finishing. as a reminder, final pieces are not due until Feb. 28 for artists.
